In the Style of #3 (film)

In the Style of Amalia Elena Veralli:

This is my third in the style of photo. This picture was taken in film, and I'm pretty proud about how well it came out! Working with film was very stressful, so I'm glad this picture came out nicely. This isn't quite what Amalia does for her work, but that is because she works with color a lot, and since this is a film shot, there is no color. I think that other than that, I think that this is a pretty good in the style of photo. I forgot to keep track of my camera settings while I was shooting in film, so I'm not sure what my settings were for this photo.

Recreation-

Amalia Elena Veralli Recreation:

Amalia's Photo:

My Photo:

Aperture: f / 8.0
Shutter speed: 1/160
ISO: 400

This is my recreation picture. I think it came out really well! I used the same type of flower that Amalia used (a white begonia), and the studio setting is the same. I don't know what the camera settings were in the original photo, because it wasn't posted, but I think mine are really similar because the picture looks the same. I used a tripod to get this picture, and a flash to get even light throughout the flower. If I could chance one thing about this picture, I would make it a little darker, because I think it is a tiny bit brighter than Amalia's picture.

Journal #19

I took this picture Tuesday afternoon at Walker Farm. I was looking for flowers I could use for my recreation, and I thought this one was really pretty, so I took a picture of it for my journal. I really like how there are flowers in the background too, and I think that the main flower is really sharp and in focus. The low aperture allows the background to be a little more blurry, and keep the focus on the main subject. Overall, I'm really happy with how this picture came out!

Journal #18

I took this picture outside my house on Wednesday night. I thought the sky looked really pretty from my window, and when I went and looked there was a giant rainbow outside. I went out to take a picture of it, and this is my favorite one I got. I had to move around in my yard a lot to get a good angle, and I also got some trees in the foreground. I really like the composition of it, and also the colors of the sky and rainbow are really beautiful. If I could retake this, I'd try and get the entire rainbow in the frame, instead of just part of it.

Nighttime Photography: Part 2

Light Painting-

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 20.0
ISO: 400

I took this picture at my house. This is my friend Alyssa, and we both decided to do our light painting project together. It took a few tries to get this picture right. I first lit Alyssa up with a flashlight, and then moved a color app on my ipod around behind her. I like how lit up she ended up being, but I think I could've done a better job painting with color behind her.

Light Painting-

Aperture: f / 4.0
Shutter Speed: 20.0
ISO: 200

This is my favorite picture from the night photography unit. I took this in my backyard, and it was pretty scary to do, and there were a few sparks that I had to stomp out, but the picture turned out really nice so it was worth it! I like how the orb isn't in the center of the frame, because I think it really applies to the rule of thirds. If I could retake this, I would probably just think more about my location.

Landscape-

Aperture: f / 8.0
Shutter Speed: 642.0
ISO: 200

This is a picture looking up at my grandparents field. I really like the colors that came out in the sky. I'm not sure what caused that, but it looks really nice. I also like the birdhouse in the foreground. If i could retake this picture, I would probably just think about finding a different location to shoot, so I had more of a scenic view.

Landscape-

Aperture: f / 14.0
Shutter Speed: 602.0
ISO: 200

This is my last landscape photo. I'm honestly really not very happy with how this picture came out, because its VERY noisy, and the colors also look kind of weird. I think the blurriness of it might be because I had to hold down the button to take the picture for 10 minutes, because I couldn't get the trigger to work, so there is probably just a little bit of camera shake. I would change a lot about this photo if I could, but mainly just trying to make it less noisy.

In The Style Of- Photo #2

In the Style of Amalia Elena Verelli-

Aperture: f / 16.0
Shutter Speed: 1/60
ISO: 400

This picture was taken in the studio with flash lighting. I'm not sure what kind of flower this is, but I really like the color and form of it. This is similar to Amalia's work, and I think that the camera setting she uses are probably pretty similar to the ones I used. I used a tripod to take this picture, and had the light directly on the flower. If I could redo this picture, I think I would try and make the flower a little sharper, so it had more detail. Other than that, I think this picture is similar to Amalia's work, and I'm pleased with how it came out.

Journal #17

Aperture: f / 4.0
Shutter Speed: 20.0
ISO: 400

I took this picture while shooting for nighttime photography. I'm not using it for the project, because I got another steel wool photo that I think came out a lot better. I think that the "O" shape that the sparks are making is kind of cool, but at the same time I wish that it had come out as a full orb. My wool burnt out too quickly, why is why it didn't come out. If I were to retake this picture, I would get a full orb of sparks, and also change my location a little so I didn't have the tree of line on the right of the orb (which was my dog's leash thing).

In The Style Of- Photo #1

In the Style of Amalia Elena Verelli-

Aperture: f / 13.0
Shutter Speed: 1/160
ISO: 400

I took this picture in the studio in the BUHS photo room. I used a telephoto lens, and in photoshop I sharpened it a lot. I used flash, and I set up this flower in a vase, and positioned it so I could get a lot of light on it. My photographer mainly takes photos of flowers in the darkroom, and she uses similar lighting to what I used, so I think that this works really well as an in the style of picture. Next time, I think I'm going to try and get a more detailed flower, so I can try and get more details in the photo. But overall, I think this picture came out pretty nice!

Nighttime Photography: Part 1

City/Town 1 (Car Trails)

Aperture: f / 8.0
Shutter Speed: 476.0
ISO: 200

I took this picture on Western Avenue in Brattleboro looking down at the highway. I really like how the highway curves and goes behind the trees. I also think the exposure turned out pretty well! The cars on the highway were going through pretty steadily, so I didn't have to wait long to get this picture. It took me two tries to get this picture, because the first time was a tiny bit over exposed, so I did it again. My shutter was open for 476 seconds, so I got a lot of car trails in this picture. I wish that the yellow sign on the right wasn't in the picture, but the car's headlights illuminated it so it showed up. Also, I'm not completely sure how the blue light in the middle got there, but I think it's pretty cool. Overall I'm happy with how this came out!

City/Town 2

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 9.0
ISO:100

I took this picture on Main Street in Brattleboro. It had just rained a little bit, so I was able to get the light reflecting off of the road, which I really like. I had a 9 second exposure for this picture, so it didn't take too long to take. I did have to take multiple shots, though, because care would keep driving into the frame and making it too bright. If I could change something about this picture, I would try and get it without any car headlights. There was a car parked that had its headlights on, and I didn't have time to wait for them to leave or turn their headlights off, so I had to get it in the photo. Other than that, I'm happy with how this picture came out!

Star Trails (Extra Credit)

Aperture: f / 10.0
Shutter Speed: 879.0
ISO: 200

I took this picture in my backyard in Putney. I really wanted to get some star trail pictures, so I was super excited that this one came out well! I had a 15 minute exposure, so I had o wait awhile to get this picture. I was happy that it came out, but it was also terrifying because when I came out to get my camera, there was a spider on it. Other than that, I really enjoyed taking this picture! I'm not sure why the bottom of the sky looks more orangey, but I think it looks nice. I'm happy with how this star trail picture turned out!

Journal #16

I took this picture on Sunday at Walker Farm in Dummerston. I was walking around and I thought that these flowers which were on a tree/bush looked really pretty! I like how the lower aperture makes the flowers, branches, and ground in the background look more blurry. If I were to take this picture again, I would move the camera up a little more so I got the full flower petals in the frame. Overall, I like how this picture came out!

Journal #15

I took this picture Tuesday on the bus ride to my track meet. I thought the apple I had looked kind of like a "perfect apple" with the single leaf on it. I didn't really have much option for where to take this picture, because I was on a bus. So, I had tho place the apple in my hand. I would've preferred to have it placed on a table or something like that. I think that this image is really sharp, and the fast shutter speed and low aperture allowed for the focus to be kept on the apple. If I could retake this picture I just wish I could've been in a different location!

Journal #14

I took this picture on Friday night at the Whetstone Station in downtown Brattleboro. I like how the light of the candle lights up the jar and salt/pepper shakers, but the background is still really dark. I also like the vantage point of this picture. I took this picture with my iPod, but this image probably had a low aperture, because the main subject was kept in focus, and there isn't any detail in the background. If I could change something about this picture, I would take it with a DSLR so the subject was sharper, and a little less fuzzy. Overall, I like how this picture came out.

Action Photography: Part 2

Black and White With Color

Aperture: f / 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
ISO: 400

I took this picture at my track meet on Tuesday. This is Phelan, and in this photo he is going over a hurdle in the 110 meter hurdles race. I used a shutter speed of 1/1000, because I wanted to freeze the fast action of the hurdlers. I really like the determination in his face, and I think he has a really cool form. I liked this picture as a black and white with color, because I think that he really pops out of the background, which emphasizes his action even more. If I could change something about this picture, I would have tried to take the picture about a half second sooner, when he was at his peak action and was directly above the hurdle. Other than that, I really think this is a cool picture, and I'm happy with how it came out!

 Pan Shot #2

Aperture: f / 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/15
ISO: 400

I also took this picture at the track meet on Tuesday. I really like how this girl almost appears to be floating. I had to try to get a pan shot of a runner quite a few times, and I'm really glad I finally got one! I also had to try a few different shutter speeds, because some of the ones I tried originally were too fast. One thing I wish I'd done differently, was get a good pan shot of someone who was on the Colonels team. I was just taking pictures of everyone who ran by, but sadly none of my pictures of my teammates came out well. Other than that, I'm pretty proud of this pan shot, and I think it came out pretty nicely.

Sequence Shot

Aperture: f / 4.8
Shutter Speed: 1/800
ISO: 400

I took this picture after practice with my friend Alyssa. We are both in photo 1, and we both needed sequence shots, so we decided to take pictures of each other. I used a fast shutter speed to capture the action of her jumping around, and I used a lower ISO because it was really bright outside when this was taken. There wasn't very much overlap in this picture, which was nice. If I could change something about this photo, I would've tried to do a better job putting it together in photoshop, because I noticed when I was uploading it that her knee in the third image is still really fuzzy. Other than that, I think this is a really cool picture, and I like how it turned out.

Journal #13

I took this picture on Tuesday driving back from my track meet. It was about 7:45pm, and the sun had just set. The sky was really beautiful! I found somewhere to pull over, but sadly that place was in the Keene Airport parking lot. I also had to sort of stick my iPod through a chain link fence to get this shot. I really like the high aperture that makes the mountains far away really in focus. I also like how this picture is focused on the mountains and sky, instead of the tarmac and planes. If I could change this picture, I would try to take it in a different area that didn't include so much man made distraction. Overall I really like this photo, and I'm happy with how it came out!

Action Photography: Part 1

Frozen Action (Vertical)

Aperture: f / 4.0
Shutter Speed: 1/200
ISO: 400

This is my "Late to Class" picture. I used flash, so that's why I don't have a super high shutter speed. I really like how much the word "LATE" stands out on the yellow pass. I also think that the papers flying around behind Allie really add to the theme, as well as the flustered look on her face. If I could change something about this picture, I would try and move a little bit to the left, because the white papers kind of blend into the white wall and window in the background. I think it would have been nicer if the papers were against the brick wall. Other than that I'm happy with how this picture turned out!

 Pan Shot

Aperture: f / 20.0
Shutter Speed: 1/25
ISO: 800

This is a pan shot of my mom's car. I had my mom drive back and forth in an empty parking lot until I got a good shot, and it was really funny! I like how blurred I was able to get the background, with the car staying mostly sharp. There is a little blur in the tires and back bumper,  but nothing extremely distracting that takes away from the image. If a could change anything about this picture, I would try and find a less busy background, and maybe get the car a little cleaner before I took pictures of it! Other than that, I like how this shot came out.

 Frozen Action (Horizontal)

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
ISO: 1600

I took this picture at my grandparents house on Saturday. It was really windy out, and they're flag was blowing around a lot, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to get a frozen action shot. I like how the tattered ends of the flags are all in different directions, and also how much the flag is blowing. If I could change something about this image, I would move to the right a little bit, so the background was just the blue sky, and not the distracting tree branches. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how this image came out.

Journal #12

I took this picture on Sunday  behind the Marina. I took it when the sun was going down, and I really like the way the light in the back silhouetted the trees on the right. I also like how this picture follows the rule of thirds. I took this picture with my iPod, but I can tell that there is a high aperture, because everything is in focus. If I could retake this picture, I would change my vantage point so I got the top of the trees in the picture too.

Journal #11

This is my dog Daisy. I took this picture while getting my loved one pictures for the "People as a Subject" assignment. I didn't end up using it for the project, because I got another picture with her ears flying back, which I thought was better. In this picture, I really like how glassy and large her eyes look. If I could change something about this photo, I would try and have a different vantage point, so there wasn't a snowbank in the background. Overall I really like this picture, and I'm glad with how it came out.

People as a Subject (Part 1)

Self Portrait

Aperture: f / 3.8
Shutter Speed: 1/10
ISO: 100

I took this picture in my living room. I moved a bunch of stuff off of the wall, so I had a clear background. I used created lighting for this shot, by pointing a lamp at myself. I like the look on my face, and it took quite a few tries to make this face without laughing. I think that this picture describes who I am, because even though I do consider myself pretty girly, but I am also really into sports, and play a sport every season, and during the summer. If I could change something about this picture, I would definitely try to have better lighting. I had to make this photo a black and white, because I didn't like the lighting. I also took out a lot of unnecessary shadows. Even though the lighting is kind of weird, I like this picture because I think it really describes me.

Teacher Picture #1

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 1/15
ISO: 400
This is a picture of the ceramics teacher, Ms. DeNiord. I am taking ceramics with her this semester, so I thought she would be a great teacher to photograph. I believe that this picture describes what she teaches, because she shows us how to make a lot of stuff on the wheel, and she's really good at it. There are a couple things I wish I could change about this picture, though. One, is the busy background. There wasn't rally any way to avoid it, because we couldn't move the wheel, or any things in the background. I also wish that her head was up a little bit more, so I could see more of her face. Overall, I think that this is a really nice picture, and it really describes what Ms. DeNiord teaches.

Extra Credit

Aperture: f / 4.5
Shutter Speed: 1/15
ISO: 400
This picture was taken on Friday during fourth block. I thought that the extra police force being on campus was a really great opportunity to do the extra credit and define a person, as a police officer. I like how in focus the two men are, and how their faces are really sharp. If I could change something about this picture, I would have them standing against a more plain background. But overall, I'm pretty happy with how this picture turned out.

People as a Subject (Part 2)

Teacher Picture #2-

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 1/40
ISO: 400

This is a picture of the foods teacher, Mrs. Cormier. She is one of my favorite teachers, so I thought she would be a great staff member to photograph. I like how focused she looks in this picture, and even though the background isn't completely plain, I think that the spice rack adds to her description as a foods teacher. If I were to retake this picture, I might of had her looking up a little bit more, so you could see more of her eyes and face.

Candid-

Aperture: f / 5.0
Shutter Speed: 1/200
ISO: 400

I took this picture of my friend Aisha. She was laughing at something one of her friends said, and when she started laughing, I caught her off guard by snapping a few photos. She thought I only had my camera out to check the photos I already have, so she wasn't expecting the picture to be taken. I really like how it looks as a black and white.  I also like how she isn't looking right at the camera, because the profile look is kind of cool. If I could retake this picture, I think I would've had an even smaller aperture, so the background was a little bit more blurred out.

Loved One-

Aperture: f  / 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/80
ISO: 400

This is my dog, Daisy. She is eleven years old. I really like this picture of her, because I love how the wind is blowing her ears back, and how she is looking into the wind as well. I also like the fuzzy look of her fur. If I could change something about this picture, I would try and make the snow look less dirty in photoshop, and also use a lower aperture so the leaves in the background were blurred out. Overall, I am pretty happy with how this picture came out.

Journal #10

I took this picture on Saturday, while I was driving to the mall with my mom. We were on the highway and it thought that the clouds looked really cool, so I decided to take a picture. I like how the picture almost looks black and white, even though it isn't. If I could change something about this picture, I would've taken in while I was stationary, and not moving. I think I would've been able to add more details to the picture that way. Other than that, I like the way that this picture came out.

Journal #9- Missed Opportunity

This weekend, I was playing indoor soccer. My friend Sarah is on the team, and she was trying to get the ball when she got tripped. She sort of guitar slid across the artificial grass, and it was really funny! She had a hilarious laughing face when she was sliding. I didn't have any kind of camera with me, and it happened very quickly, so I didn't have a chance to get the picture.

Journal #8- Missed Opportunity

Over the weekend, I was hanging out at home and it started snowing outside. It was different than the snow we've been getting though. These were huge flakes, and they were so pretty! I really wanted to get a picture with them with my DSLR, but by the time I got my camera, the snow wasn't nearly as pretty. Next time I'll try and get my camera quicker!

Landscapes and Nature Project (Part 2)

Vertical Landcape

Aperture: f / 22.0
Shutter Speed: 1/50
ISO: 100

I took this picture on Tuesday morning on the beach in Wells, Maine. I woke up at 6AM just to get a good sunrise shot, and I'm really glad that it came out well. This photo is an HDR, and it has five layers of different exposures in it. I'm really happy with the surrealist look that it has.

Black and White

Aperture: f / 5.3
Shutter Speed: 1/320
ISO: 100
I took this picture on West Hill in Dummerston, Vermont. I really like the details in all of the trees, not only the larger one, but the smaller ones behind it, too. If I could change something about this picture, I would take the little fence near the large tree out, because it is not something from nature.

Soft Water

Aperture: f / 22.0
Shutter Speed: 0.5
ISO: 200
This picture was taken on Brook Road in Putney, Vermont. I turned it into a black and white because I thought that it made the details in the banks on the sides of the water stand out more. I like how the rule of thirds is pretty evident in this photo, with the water starting on the left and drawing your eye up to the top of the image. If I could change something, I definitely would have made the shutter speed even larger, so the water had a softer effect than it does now.

Journal #7

I took this picture on Tuesday in Maine. It was absolutely freezing outside, and I was trying to get some pictures of this lighthouse quickly, so I could get back into the heated car. I really like the blue colors in this photo, and the snow covered rocks in the foreground. If I could retake this picture, I would probably do it with a DSLR camera, because I think that I could get more details in the far away lighthouse. But overall, I think that this photo came out pretty well!

Landscapes and Nature Project (Part 1)

Horizontal Closeup

Aperture: / 4.0
Shutter Speed: 1/250
ISO: 100

This picture was taken in a field off of West Hill in Putney, Vermont. I saw the cattails on the edge of the field, and I thought they would be a great closeup photo opportunity. I really love how the low aperture makes the cattails in front really in focus, and everything behind them is blurry. I also really like the snow flurries in the background, and how there are the little pieces of fuzz on the cattails. If I could change something about this photo, I think I would have tried to focus on one individual cattail rather than two.

Horizontal Landscape (Panorama)

Aperture: f / 22.0
Shutter Speed: 1/15
ISO: 100

This picture was taken on Bunker Road, in Dummerston, Vermont. I really like how the higher aperture makes everything in focus. This photo was kind of hard to take, because I had to make the tripod very tall to be able to get this landscape over the huge snowbank next to where I was standing. Once I merged the pictures together, I made the colors stand out more, especially the blue in the sky. If I could change this picture, I would try to make the snow pile at the bottom of the image more white, and less yellow.

Vertical Closeup

Aperture: f / 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/4000
ISO: 400

This picture was taken at my grandparents house in Putney, Vermont. I was sitting on a stool on their deck for about 30 minutes, just taking pictures of the birds. I am really proud of this picture. I had been trying to get a shot of a bird in flight for the entire time, but the birds weren't being very cooperative. When I finally got one, I was very happy. I like how the high shutter speed makes the bird and it's wings really in focus. I also think that the color of the sky is really nice in the background. Thats what I focused on fixing in bridge, making the blue sky stand out a lot. I'm honestly not really sure what else I would want to change about this image. I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Journal #6

I took this picture at my grandparents house on Wednesday morning. This tree is about 50 years old, but it is HUGE, and is probably about twice the height of the house which is right next to it. It's also really thick. I like this picture, because I think that the twisting branches look very cool against the background sky. If I could retake this picture, I would either wait until the sky was a more interesting color than the blue it is, or I would find a better angle to take the picture from, because I feel like this one is kind of awkward.

Journal #5

This picture was taken in my grandparent's house on Wednesday. I'm not completely sure what kind of plant it is, but I think it is really pretty. I especially like how alive and green it looks, which is a pretty large contrast to the weather outside right now. I took this picture with my iPod, and the flash was on, which is why the flower is so pink and everything behind it looks black. If I could change something, I would probably try and get more of the plant in focus, instead of just the flower.

Elements of Design- Final Products

Line

Aperture:  f /4.5
Shutter Speed:  1/15
ISO:  400

I took this picture in the storage closet in the gym. I like how the lines in the fencing came in so clear, and everything behind them is blurry. In bridge, I had to brighten it a lot, because it was pretty dark. One thing that I really don't like about this photo, is the background of it. It wasn't anything I could change, but I think it would have been nicer if there weren't a bunch of bags and bins in the background.

Texture

Aperture:  f /5.6
Shutter Speed:  1/200
ISO:  400

This picture was taken outside of the school on one of the sidewalks. I like the packed down snow, and how it is a lot of different colors and textures.  On e thing I really wish was different, is the crispness of the snow in the image. I think it looks a little blurry, which I don't really like. I had to brighten it a lot, because when I was outside, I really couldn't see how my pictures were coming out, because I couldn't see the screen.

Shape

Aperture:  f /4.5
Shutter Speed:  1/8
ISO:  400

I took this picture on the bleachers in the gym. I like this image, because I really enjoy basketball. I think that it works well for shape, because you can see the shadows around the edges of the round ball. I sort of manipulated the colors in bridge, because the colors of the original image were very cool, and I thought it looked kind of weird. Once I warmed up the colors, I think that the image came out a lot better. If I could change something about this, I would place the ball so the corner of the bleachers wasn't blocking some of it.

Pattern

Aperture:  f /4.5
Shutter Speed:  1/10
ISO:   400

This is a close up picture of some of the "feathers" on the chicken sculpture in the hallway. I really like the variety of patterns in this photo, and I especially like the bright colors in the "feathers". I had to brighten up this photo A LOT, because it was very dark, but I am really happy with the way it turned out. If I could change something about this photo, I think I would have gotten even more "feathers" in it, to create a wider variety of patterns.

Journal #4- Missed Opportunity

On Monday during the snowstorm, I let my dog outside, and when I brought her back in, she was completely covered in snow. Her name is Daisy, and she is a eleven year old beagle. I really wanted to get a picture of her snow covered face and body, but by the time I got my camera, the snow had already melted off of her. I wish I had gotten the picture, because she looked so cute with all the white snowflakes covering her face and eyes. Next time I let her outside in a snowstorm, I will definitely make sure to have my camera on and ready when she comes back inside.

Journal #3

I took this picture at my grandparents house in Putney last week. It was about 7:00am, and the sun was just coming up over the mountains. The lighting looked really pretty, so I thought I'd take a picture. I like the definition of the clouds, and how you can see the individual rays of sun. If I could change something about this picture, I would've gone outside to take it instead of taking it through a window, so it was more clear. I also would try to get the little green reflection dot out of the photo.

Journal #2

I took this picture outside of my grandparents house in Putney on Saturday. I saw the sunset from inside, and I had to trudge out into the snow and cold to get a picture of it. I really like the pink shades in the sky, and the snow covered field. If I were do retake this picture, I probably would have focused more on the trees, or zoomed in more.

Journal #1

This picture was taken in the summer a few years ago at the Bridge Of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. I really like how the orange flowers pop against the blue sky. I also like how the flower in the front is more in focus than the ones behind it. If I could change something about this photo, I would try and get the whole stem of the flower in it as well.
